Halton Rates (Acton) Lowest Crime Severity in Canada
Haltons' reputation including Acton as the safest regional municipality in the country was confirmed yesterday with Statistics Canada’s release of its 2008 crime statistics annual report.
For the first time, the federal agency’s report included the new Crime Severity Index (CSI) along with the traditional crime rate, ranking all Canadian municipal police services with an urban core over 10,000 population.
In both the overall crime severity index and violent crime index, Halton including Acton had the lowest crime rates among its major comparator police services in the Greater Toronto Area and Golden Horseshoe, as well as across Canada:

Hamilton Police Service 88.7 – 107.2
Toronto Police Service 81.5 – 139.1

“Crime rates can be influenced by a number of factors outside police control, but this is still a strong testament to the outstanding calibre of work being done by our officers, civilian employees, and volunteers, in close cooperation with our many community partners,” says Halton Regional Police Chief Gary Crowell, adding, “Halton residents take a keen interest in policing and public safety issues, and we could not do our jobs effectively without their active participation and support.”
