Acton is an idyllic community of approx. 10,000 people located in the Town of Halton Hills, in Halton Region and is the last small town left in the Greater Toronto Area. Acton is situated on top of the Niagara Escarpment within the Ontario Greenbelt and is serviced by Highway 7 (Running between Brampton and Guelph) and the former Highway 25. Acton offers the best of city and country, and is only 30 minutes from Pearson Airport and 45 minutes from downtown Toronto.
Founded in 1844, the location of Acton was chosen for it's abundance of fresh water from nearby Blue Springs, Black Creek and the Credit/Grand River watershed.
The town is nicknamed "Leathertown" because of the extensive tanning industry that was predominant in the area during the 19th century and early 20th century. The nickname is synomonous with the slogan "It's Worth the Drive to Acton" derived from the Olde Hide House - a large leather goods store.
Go train service to Acton with two morning trains and two evening trains is scheduled to start in early 2012.
The new 9000 sq.ft., energy efficient and environmentally friendly, Acton Library was opened in May 2011.
Future growth in Acton will be limited for the next five to ten years due to infrastructure limitations (water and sewer systems).
The town also features manmade Fairy Lake, a favourite fishing hole, canoeing and kayaking hotspot accessible from Prospect Park... a 14 acre park with picnic areas, ball diamonds, tennis courts, indoor soccer facility, bandshell, splashpad and boat house...the kids are sure to enjoy!
The newer east end of town is home to a Sportsplex and Community centre which include a hockey rink (Soon to be twinned with another ice surface), pleasure pad, seniors centre, skatepark and two soccer fields.
